A wonderful stand-alone novel from the author of the fantastic Tales of the Otori. Sei. a renowned but aging and financially struggling storyteller, is trying to revive his career when he unwittingly becomes involved with a political conspiracy trying to raise support for an invasion of Korea. His life becomes even more complicated when his two youngest daughters leave their respective husbands and return home. Hearn's characters are fascinating, and the customs and politics of 19th century Tokyo stranger and more interesting than the created worlds of most fantasy novels. An utter delight: highly recommended. - Stephen (QBD)
