'When I went to Afghanistan for the first time, I found a country at war. What I really wanted was to find out where I came from, where the myths ended and my reality began.'
As a child growing up in Tunbridge Wells, Saira was told by her father that she really came from somewhere else: a fairytale land of heroes and conquerors, princesses and villains - her family's lost homeland, Afghanistan.
Years later, when she travelled to Afghanistan for the first time, she finally understood the value of her father's gift. He'd drawn her a mythical map - colourful, impressionistic and idealised - that allowed her to reclaim her heritage.
'The Storyteller's Daughter' chronicles a journey of discovery: from the myths and legends she grew up with to the harsh realities of Afghanistan's recent past.
