PURE ENGLISH JOY
What can I say about this book that hasn’t been said already? Charming, witty, profound, gripping, moving, funny. It’s real, it’s quintessentially English, it’s a whodunit, it’s a thriller and it just happens to be the 3rd highest selling fiction hardcover in British publishing history. Oh and it’s the author’s first book. Oh and Steven Spielberg has bought the rights to the movie. On that alone you’d be mad to skip it. The writing style is gorgeous. Set in a retirement village in England, the only regular feature of that country that doesn’t get a mention is the rain. If you don’t love everything that England stands for when you start this book, you will by the end. Characterisation. Is. Brilliant. You’ll love and grow to adore them all by book’s end. And yet by the half way mark you won’t know who they REALLY are. There are hints of course, but this is a question of who the murderer is, as well as who the cast are. But that’s just how deep this story goes and it’s just fantastic. Speaking of the half way mark, I’m there and I have a theory on who the murderer is. Finally, TTMC demonstrates how far quality writing can take the reader in different directions. Mystery? Check. Pure lit? Check. Love story? Check. Comedy? Check. Life changing experience? You can bet your last pound note in that too.
