The Grimjinx family is notorious in and around the town of Vengekeep for the numerous heists they've successfully pulled off while never leaving behind enough evidence to be convicted of a crime. Twelve-year-old Jaxter Grimjinx is the only one in his family who isn't especially dexterous when it comes to thievery. While he's a bit clumsy and his fingers aren't nimble enough to quickly pick locks, he does have his own talent: He's book smart. Jaxter's study of non-magical solutions to magical problems has made him an invaluable asset to his con artist family.
However, the Grimjinxes may finally have pulled one con too many. Jaxter's mother, Allia, is a veritable artist when it comes to forgery, and in an especially daring move, she swapped the prophetic tapestry that's used to guide Vengekeep each year for a fake that she wove herself. Thinking to build in a little insurance for her family, she wove scenes that depict the Grimjinx family as the saviors of Vengekeep. After all, what town official would ever question or detain the one family integral to the town's survival? But the unexpected happens. The terrible disasters that Allia put into her fake tapestry begin to come true, and no one is more stunned than the Grimjinx family. Suddenly, Vengekeep is besieged by natural disasters and flaming monsters, courtesy of the secretly enchanted counterfeit tapestry. With his family forced to stay and combat the impending doom, Jaxter must leave his hometown in search of a way to keep the increasingly dangerous prophecies from wiping Vengekeep off the map.
