This novel tells the story of a transatlantic voyage from Connecticut to England in a sailing boat, "The Wanderer".
Sophie feels a strangely deep affinity with the sea, and she approaches the trip, with her three uncles and two boy cousins, with excitement. And at the end of it, she'll be reunited with her beloved grandfather, Bompie, about whose life she tells many stories. But alongside Sophie's story we read the daily log of her cousin Cody, and learn that there is a dark mystery behind the voyage of "The Wanderer".
Sophie has secrets that she's not telling. Bompie is not her grandfather - in fact she's never met him. What terrible tragedy is she hiding in her past? Will this journey help her come to terms with it? Or will it destroy her?
