This is a story of the orca, the largest of the dolphin family. Known as killer whales, the orcas' relationship with the Aboriginal whalers of Twofold Bay has become legend. This part of the coast was famous for its whaling industry. Here, man and orcas were partners in the same chase, herding whales to their bloody death at the end of a harpoon spear.

'The Whalers' comes directly from an oral storytelling tradition and tells, in the lyrical voice of Percy Mumbulla, of the life and times of Percy's old seafaring uncle. Originally appearing in 'The Nearest the White Man Gets', this narrative is part of a group of stories and poems collected by Roland Robinson. The illustrations reinforce the wonder and excitement of the special relationship between orca and whaler.
