The protagonist here is a young man living in Chelsea during the 1950s and 1960s. Edwin Carpenter has run away from a brutal father and is in the grip of a terrible compulsion. He steals, obsessively, without any interest in financial gain, and the novel tells how, with the help of his lover, Mark, Edwin struggles to cure himself and to reconcile himself to his past.
