Tim Frazer's friend and ex-business partner Harry Denston has gone missing. That's not all - he owes money and there are several people desperate to track him down.
Frazer's pursuit involves cars and boats and colourful characters, but he manages to survive while others around him perish. A Russian ship has just been wrecked off the Yorkshire coast and a man from the boat dies in a local hostelry.
Frazer eventually becomes enlightened as the various clues are pieced together.
