In September 1939 Europe and its colonies were thrust into a long and deadly war. Three years later the USA and much of Asia was involved in the same war. For most countries, World War II was unlike most previous wars in that it was not confined to distant battlefields between trained military men but was also fought in the streets of cities and the squares of small villages.
Women, and children in some cases, joined the work force in a desperate attempt to win their country's war. Millions of civilians, far more than the number of soldiers, died in death camps, in their own homes as bombs fell, at the hands of their own governments, or by starvation as enemy forces ravaged their countries.
