In September 1888 Vincent Van Gogh moved into the Yellow House, a cottage on the outskirts of the Provencal town of Arles. It was the first home he had for several years and the last he was ever to occupy. In October he was joined by Paul Gauguin, and for nine weeks they worked together, in this tiny, claustrophobic space. It was one the most productive periods ever for each painter, during this period Van Gogh painted most of the Sunflowers, twin pictures of Gauguin's and his chairs, and the Sowers, yet at what cost was this fever of creative endeavour achieved? At the end of their two months together Vincent went mad and cut off his ear. So what exactly happened in that house? How did they live? What did they cook for dinner? How did their finances work? Why did Van Gogh go to the local brothel but not Gauguin? What did their neighbours think of them? What were they reading in the newspapers at the time? How did they influence each other?
