A Paradox.
Eun Kim uses the unique Asian concept of yin and yang to explain how American virtues and vices are opposite sides of the same coin. Unlike the dualism characteristic of the West, in much of Asia the forces of yin and yang are seen to co-exist in everything, and to complete each other to maintain cosmic harmony. And like culture, an entity regarded as yin in one light can be regarded as yang in another.
Eun Kim begins by looking at America in the world and continues by examining American "virtues" such as the competitive spirit; systematic planning and organisation; daring to be yourself; separating the personal from the professional; and the empowerment of women, and American "vices" such as owning too much, enjoying too little; refusing to grow up; the obsession with big; fading family values; and too much violence. She then provides an understanding which can help build the cultural bridges necessary in today's world.
