In this novel set in the seventh century A.D., Theodore is first a monk, then a clerk in the army of the Emperor Heraclius, then a poet and historian. But when there's a transfer of imperial power, Theodore returns to teaching Greek in a monastery, where he encounters a young African monk and falls in love with him--and the two travel to England, where Theodore becomes the Archbishop of Canterbury.
