Guided by the wisdom of the desktop calendars she turned over every day for the GP whose offices she cleaned at night, Margery believes she has lead a good life. Now she finds herself sitting on the 43rd floor of the Tropic Hotel, preparing to throw herself to her death. What went wrong? She has just turned 80 and has discovered many secrets about her own family and neighbourhood that have been kept from her during the 60 years she lived in Gold Street, Brunswick. She feels betrayed by her neighbourhood and family and even the home help the council sent seems to be in on it. Two of her neighbours have recently died in their homes and Pat across the way has been put into a home. What is there left to live for?
