The murder of her father during a raid on his store means that life can never be the same for Davey and her family. They go to stay with relatives in New Mexico, but even far away from her home Davey is haunted by the horror of that night.
Her anger and grief are so strong that she is scarcely aware that others are suffering too.
So Davey walks alone through the bleak sun-baked canyons - a landscape as desolate as her own soul.
