The famous Tiger tanks of the German Panzer forces were only available at the hard pressed front in modest quantities, but this tiny number forged a legned out of all proportion to its size. This fascinating programme plots the history of its conception and evolution against the background of World War Two tank development. Expert analysis is provided by tank and military historians David Fletcher and Professor John Erickson, and also includes new footage of surviving Tiger tanks.

Just before the German invasion of Russia in June 1941 Hitler ordered a heavy tank mounting an 88mm gun be built for the German Army. The needs for this machine became urgent once it was discovered that the Red Army was fielding superior tanks in the form of the T-34 and KV-1. The Tiger I tank was created in 1942, the Wehrmachts first armour capable of using the 88mm gun, preferring firepower over mobility. In 1944 it was followed by the even heavier Tiger II.

In The Tiger Tank Story, Mark Healy details the development and exploits of the most famous tank ever built. With full design information, the history of its use in actions across Europe, and over 100 photographs and artworks, some previously unpublished, this book will appeal to both military enthusiasts and general readers alike. Mark Healy is the author of several books on World War II, including the best-selling Zitadelle: The German Offensive against the Kursk Salient 4-17 July 1943.
