This book traces the main networks that inform and are informed by Chris's work, especially in terms of the effect that Chris has had on Australian writers and writing, it is a tribute to Chris on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Through its focus on Chris, it will propose an alternative cultural history of Australia since the 1950s. Travelling without Gods contains biographical and critical pieces, poems (including new work by Chris), an interview and essays that respond to and situate Chris's career in terms of the wider milieu in which that career occurred. These works illuminate, celebrate and critique Chris's work and its various contexts. The book will also offer, importantly, a sample of Chris's unpublished journals, as well as photography that illuminates both Chris's life and his relationship with the visual arts. The contributors are established writers, all of whom have important links with Chris.
