In 1998 Durham University had around two thousand items in its art collection; as of today it has over six thousand. This is the first publication to cover the whole art collection, from its conception in 1832 to the modern day. The collection is full of important twentieth-century and contemporary works of art, accumulated with the help of the colleges and displayed throughout the university. The book provides valuable insight into its many varied paintings, prints and sculptures, as well as explaining the history and development of the collection, interweaving it expertly with the history of the university itself.
