The story of Douglas Barnard based on a pencil diary, regaling his success in evading capture in France and escaping via Spain after having been shot down. A bomber and Spitfire pilot, decorated with the DFC, Barnard was later court-martialled for taking an aircraft without permission to rescue Japanese-held, emaciated, allied prisoners of war.
