D-Day
On this day 150,000 British, American and Canadian troops launched a seaborne assault on the beaches of Normandy. It was the decisive battle of World War II, the beginning of the end of Nazi tyranny in Europe.
The remarkable human stories of those who were there have been gathered from international archives including, in the USA, the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, and, in the UK, the Portsmouth D-Day Museum and the Imperial War Museum. This is the most personal account to date of the day's events, the build-up and aftermath of the momentous battle. It draws on contemporary letters and diaries as well as previously unpublished memoirs and interviews with survivors.
