A Cockney Saga.
Waggoner's Way is a small backstreet on the southern boundary of Bermondsey, home to a close-knit community of predominantly railway folk and their families. The Brennens and the Kellys are among those who live there. They have been friends for years; Joe Brennen works as a train driver, Tom Kelly as a shunter; Ada and Mary, their wives, patiently spend their time trying to unravel their children's tangled love lives - especially when it comes to young Kay Brennen who has loved flirtatious Pat Kelly with unrequited devotion since she was a teenager.
Both families become unavoidably involved with local dramas - from the escapades of the local villains to a fire in the freight yard itself that threatens to become a major catastrophe.
And then there's the death of moneylender Grace Dines, a bitter old lady who's always browbeaten her docile son, Simon. When she's found brutally killed, Danny Adams, ex-RAF and sole survivor of a Lancaster bomb crash, is arrested and charged with her murder. Only Kay's sister, Elsie, knows the truth about Danny - and she's been found unconscious in her own home . . .
