Catherine Sloper, the plain, modest daughter of a prominent physician, has one major attraction: her inheritance. When Morris Townsend, a charming and worldly young man, begins to pay court to her, Catherine - although by no means overestimating her own personal charms - cannot believe that he is concerned only with her wealth. Dr Sloper, however, believs otherwise and not wishing his daughter to fall prey to a worthless fortune-hunter, threatens to disinherit her if she marries him. Catherine has fallen deeply in love with Townsend and no threats, no separations and no humiliation can diminish that affection. But pride may always prevent her from displaying it. This is a literary gem: rich in wit, in sparkling dialogue and brilliantly observed characterization.
