Once much loved and cherished racehorses are often abandoned to a life of starvation and neglect. Left unwanted and unloved it's these beautiful animals often die alone in squalor. One woman was determined to change all that.
Helen Yeadon held back the tears as she watched another brutally neglected racehorse arrive at their stables -- abandoned by all and without the will to survive, Gee was in a pitiful state.
Then another troubled soul arrived at their stables, Sophie was a quiet and withdrawn teenager who had stopped speaking - causing her friends and family much anxiety. Soon, Helen watched as a miraculous thing began to take place. Gee started to respond to Sophie's presence and Sophie in turn started to respond to Gee. An unlikely friendship began to develop and an idea formed in Helen's mind.
Fast forward five years and Greatwood is bringing disadvantaged children and abandoned racehorses together.
This unique project allows children with special needs, emotional and behavioural issues and autistic spectrum to learn life skills through interaction with and caring for the horses.
