The subject of this memoir - attempts to have a baby through IVF - will resonate with many women. What makes this manuscript different and special, however, is the self-questioning that is such a part of Joanne's story. In discussing why motherhood is so important to her, she is not afraid to look clearly at her own view of herself. She has to ask herself some difficult and often painful questions, and the manuscript is enriched by the hard-won self-knowledge that results.
