One of the most incredible adventures of WW1 - an Australian airman (Captain Thomas Walter White) captured in Iraq is force-marched across the Middle East to POW camp in Turkey, only to escape to Russia as a stowaway on a Bolshevic smuggler's ship, where he arrives in the maelstrom of the Russian revolution. Further flight to Bulgaria where he meets up with the Allies and finds safety in England.
He marries Vera Deakin, daughter of earlier Australian Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, against the family's wishes. White then becomes a minister in the Lyons government in the 1930, re-enlists in WWII, is knighted in 1950 and dies in 1957. The authors capture wonderfully the adventure of White's flight and have written and researched a fascinating account of one of Australia's forgotten war heroes.
