'At some stage over the last few years I came to the resolution that it was through no fault of mine that I got MS. Not only did I not deserve to have it, but there was nothing I could do to change the situation. The only choice was to get on with life. I had finally convinced myself to stop looking for the answer to the question "why me?" and accept "why not me?".'
Anna Healey was a talented young teacher and actor with a world of opportunities to consider when a series of mystery - and seemingly unconnected - medical problems plagued her: sore knees, lower back pain, dragging feet, optic neuritis, bladder problems. It would be several months before Anna was finally diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and her life as she previously knew it was changed forever.
Not yet thirty, the diagnosis initially seemed to be a life sentence, with depression and thoughts of suicide tormenting her at the worst times. Confined to a wheelchair and with a new baby to care for, the simplest of tasks were suddenly near impossible, a nightmare for such an independent, fun-loving and vital person.
But Anna Healey is no ordinary woman: her remarkable strength of character saw her through those dark days to reach incredible new highs, learning to drive again and regaining her independence, launching herself on the public speaking circuit to promote the MS cause and, most incredibly, becoming an accomplished sailor and competing with great success at the highest levels of Australian sailing.
'Why Not Me?' is an inspirational story of overcoming life's toughest hands, and how attitude and hard work are fundamental to attaining previously unimagined highs.
