It is summer 1929, and Siobhan Clough and Pamela Barker, close friends since childhood, are enjoying a holiday on the English south coast with their growing families. With them is Mary, companion to Siobhan, and Liam, her volatile son. All is well until the arrival of George Clough - father to Christine, Emma and Ned. A man of strong views and even stronger temper, he browbeats his gentle wife, treats Liam like a servant, belittles Christine and terrifies young Ned...As they grow up the Clough children each react to their domineering father in different ways: Emma becomes involved in the left wing politics of the 1930s; Ned, weak of character and indulged by his mother, embarks upon a road that can only lead to disaster; Christine finds herself attracted to the man her father would disapprove of above all others.
Against the backdrop of wartime London the tangled stories of the children who once built sandcastles on a sunny beach are played out...
