In 1989 Richard Leakey, paleoanthropologist and head of Kenya's National Museums, was appointed in charge of wildlife management by President Daniel arap Moi. Leakey had to fight corrupt officials, raise millions of dollars to enforce a ban on the ivory trade - all the while under scrutiny of the government who appointed him.
